A versatile musician, Alvin graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music (USA). With a major in Contemporary Writing and Production,
and a minor in Writing for TV and New Media, he was awarded Summa Cum Laude upon graduation. Bagging several awards including the Dean's list for several semesters, he also won the the Best Jingle Composition Award throughout the entire school, which it became the official jingle used for Berklee's Internet Radio Network's podcast.
At Berklee, he had the privilege to understudy Orchestration from Grammyaward nominee Bill Elliot, Jazz Big Band arrangements from renowned arranger Manuel Kaufmann, Film Scoring from industry experts Kurt Biederwolf and Eric Reasoner, and Piano under award winning Jazz pianist Tim Ray and Organist Dave Limina. In addition, under the recommendation of his professors, he also worked as a Core Music Tutor, tutoring his peers at Berklee, and a Piano Accompanist for ensembles.
His musicianship started with classical piano at age 5, which he took graded classical exams (ABRSM) to grade 8. At age 13, he started learning the guitar, and at 17, he started performing professionally - Piano/Keyboards as main instrument, and Acoustic Guitar+Footdrums as secondary.
Some of the venues he has performed at include Hard Rock Café, Shanghai Dolly, Fullerton Hotel, Raffles Hotel, and the Esplanade Theatre, which his role in performing ranges from being a resident instrumentalist, to being a freelance session musician. He has an extensive repertoire of Pop, Rock, and Jazz.
Besides performing, he also teaches in established music schools around Singapore, and government schools on an ad-hoc basis. His students range from children as young as 5 years old, to a senior age of 70, with whom he shares his passion in music with. Click on his Teaching page to learn more!
Other than making music, he enjoys playing with his dog, Story, a 5 year old golden retriever and irritating his cat Lucy, a mongrel breed adopted from SPCA. He loves recreational diving too, and served as a Naval Diver during his national service days, when he was once.... pretty much physically fit.
