Chee Wah Yong plays both double and electric basses, in various diverse musical situations.

He was the Principal Double Bassist for Phantom Of the Opera (Singapore) in 2007, played for The Lion King (Singapore) in 2011, Company in 2012, Next To Normal in 2013; as well as LaSalle’s musical productions of World Goes ‘Round, Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Into The Woods, A Handful Of Keys, Working, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Lucky Stiff, Oh What A Lovely War, Nine, Starting Here Starting Now, You Are A Good Man Charlie Brown, and Sirens (project conceived by Kaye Tuckerman and musical direction by Tony McGill). He played for Jonathan Lim/Chen Zhang Yi’s Pursuant musical (2013); for No Regrets (2011), a theatrical/musical production by Sing’Theatre to celebrate the life of Edith Piaf and her songs; and will be playing for Trevor Ashley’s Starstruck (A Live Cabaret Tribute to the Divas).

He also plays classical music with Re:mix, City Harvest Orchestra, Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Players. He was the Principal Double Bassist for Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra performing a Korean concert (in Feb 2010) that featured the songs of Oh Joonsung, as well as Principal Double Bassist and Electric Bassist for Russell Watson (Jan 2011). He was again the Principal Double Bassist for SLO Orchestra as part of Paris Ballet Opera’s production of Giselle in Jan 2012. He also played for Sarah Brightman when she sang for the Grand Opening of Resorts World Singapore in Dec 2012. He has played for SLO’s operas Madama Butterfly, Salome, Manon Lescaut. He has played for Swan Lake by Bolshoi Ballet Company in Nov 2013.

He has played jazz with The Jazz Kitchen Quartet (featuring Melissa Tham on vocals) for 3 years at The Barstop (2007-2009), and Imelda at 1 Degree 15 Marina Club (2009), Mei Sheum and Sebastian Ho for 3 years at Pan Pacific Hotel. He has also played jazz with Anne Weerapas, Umi Yushida, Mayanova, Aubrey Ng, Andayoma, Marcella Pinilla, Alemay Fernandez and Thomson Big Band. He could be seen subbing regularly at the now defunct Jazz@Southbridge. He has played jazz, together with Jordan Wei on piano, at Baretto, an award-winning Italian Restaurant/wine bar along Bt Pasoh Road for the most part of 2010.

He also played for Peter Tan and Amy Lim at the Esplanade Recital Studio in 2006, 2007 and 2011, Sharon Li Xiao Yan’s concert in 2005, as well as Pan Xiu Qiong’s comeback concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall in 2004.  He was the Principal Double Bassist in the orchestra for George Lam’s shows in Genting and Singapore in 2009.

He has played regularly for local singers like Olivia Ong, Bevlyn Khoo, and Tay Kewei.

He has also taught double bass for Nanyang Poly CO, St Nicholas Girls (String Ensemble and Chinese Orchestra), St Margaret’s Sec (Symphonic Band and String Ensemble), Temasek Sec (CO), German European School Singapore, Damai Sec (Symphonic Band) as well as conducted jazz and bass workshops for Nanyang Girls, Raffles Institution, RJC, Hwa Chong JC.
