Calista Liaw
Er Hu
Calista Liaw is a versatile Erhu musician, currently under the tutelage of Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s (SCO) concertmaster — Mr Li Bao Shun. After serving as concertmaster of Nanyang Girl’s High Chinese Orchestra, she has performed with many esteemed local ensembles and orchestras and founded a traditional Chinese music quintet - 馨丝竹, which was awarded 2nd Place at the Singapore Chinese Music Competition in 2020.
Calista seeks to reimagine the Erhu through the exploration of multi-disciplinary collaborations. She has worked with various artistes including Jonathan Rao from SCO, Ayden Sng from Mediacorp, on releasing music videos across social media platforms like Instagram and Youtube.
14th Street Music also scouted Calista and Rao for the film music recording of Michael Bay’s pandemic movie, Songbird, for which they received widespread media recognition. Her debut solo recital 【让你爱上二胡】was released online in October 2020, featuring a variety of genres alongside many acclaimed professionals to challenge the boundaries and stereotypes of traditional Chinese music.
Calista’s first commissioned composition, 《偶然》, is an Erhu contemporary piece which she composed and recorded in collaboration with Chinese ink artist Yeo Shih-Yun’s exhibition ‘Chance Encounters’ as part of Huayi and Singapore Art Week 2021 at the Esplanade.
